Wax, Tan, Protect: How to Safely Combine Waxing, Tanning & Sun Care
At Lavender and Clove, I’m dedicated to helping you feel confident in your skin—with glowing results that last. When it comes to waxing, tanning, and sun exposure, timing and aftercare are crucial. Whether you're preparing for a beach trip, a special event, or simply desire that sun-kissed glow, here's how to safely combine waxing and tanning—without compromising your skin's health.
🌿 1. Wax First, Always
Waxing removes hair from the root and exfoliates the top layer of skin, leaving it smooth but more sensitive. That’s why I always recommend waxing before tanning—whether you’re sunbathing, using self-tanner, or getting a spray tan.
Why it matters:
Waxing after tanning can lift or strip your color.
Tanned skin is more fragile and prone to irritation during waxing.
Self-tanner can settle into open pores after waxing, causing a patchy look.
💡 Pro Tip: Wait 24–48 hours after your wax before tanning.
⚠️ Risks of Waxing & Tanning Too Closely Together
Doing both treatments too close together—or in the wrong order—can cause serious skin issues:
Increased sensitivity, redness, or stinging
Irritation or chemical burns from tanning products on freshly waxed skin
Sunburn or hyperpigmentation on newly exposed skin
Ingrown hairs if sunscreen or tanner clogs pores too soon
🕒 Spacing things out is key to keeping your skin smooth, clear, and glowing.
☀️ 2. Be Smart About Sun Exposure
Freshly waxed skin is especially vulnerable to UV rays. I recommend avoiding direct sun exposure on waxed areas for 48 hours.
Protect your skin by:
Wearing loose, breathable clothing
Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every 2 hours
Avoiding peak sun (10 AM – 4 PM)
Even on cloudy days, SPF is non-negotiable.
✨ 3. Glow Without the Risk
If you want that bronzed look, go for a self-tanner or spray tan—just after waxing and once your skin has calmed down.
Here’s how to get the best results:
Exfoliate 24 hours before your wax (not after!)
Wait at least 24–48 hours after waxing before applying tanner
Moisturize daily to maintain an even glow
Avoid hot showers and scrubbing right after waxing or tanning
🧴 4. Sunscreen = Your Skin’s BFF
Sunscreen protects your skin from:
Hyperpigmentation
Premature aging
Burns and irritation
I recommend using a mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) for sensitive skin—especially after waxing.
✅ Quick Recap:
Wax first
Wait 24–48 hours
Use sunscreen daily
Tan safely
