What You Want to Know Before Your First Brazilian Wax
Thinking about getting your first Brazilian wax? Girl, I’ve got you. As someone who’s done hundreds of them right here at Lavender & Clove in Watertown, NY, I know the questions, the nerves, and even the myths that swirl around this popular (and totally empowering) service. Let’s talk real-deal prep, pain, and what actually happens so you can walk in feeling confident and ready.
1. It’s Not as Bad as You Think—Promise Okay, yes, it’s a wax… on one of the most sensitive areas of your body. But it’s also quick, way less scary than your imagination makes it out to be, and with a professional who knows what they’re doing (hey, that’s me), it’s manageable. Most first-timers say it wasn’t nearly as painful as they expected.
Pro Tip: The first time is usually the most uncomfortable because the hair is coarser. It gets easier every time after!
2. Hair Length Matters More Than You’d Think If your hair is too short, the wax won’t grip. If it’s too long, it can make the experience a bit more uncomfortable. The sweet spot? About 1/4 inch—think the length of a grain of rice.
Pro Tip: Stop shaving at least 2-3 weeks before your appointment so you’re at the right length.
3. Exfoliate Before—But Not Right Before Gently exfoliating the day before your wax helps remove dead skin and reduces the chance of ingrown hairs. But skip exfoliating the same day as your appointment. We want your skin calm, not freshly scrubbed.
4. You Can Absolutely Get a Brazilian on Your Period Yup, it’s totally okay. Just wear a clean tampon or menstrual cup and give me a heads-up. You might be a little more sensitive during your cycle, so if you’re nervous about pain, try to schedule it a few days before or after.
5. Your Aftercare is Just as Important as the Wax Smooth, bump-free results depend on what you do afterward. Avoid working out, hot baths, or tight clothes for 24 hours post-wax. I’ll go over everything with you after your service, including product recs and how to prevent ingrowns.
6. It’s Totally Normal to Be Nervous (or a Little Shy) Listen, I get it. You’re baring it all to someone you just met—but I promise, this is a no-judgment, body-positive space. We keep it professional, efficient, and even lighthearted. I’ll walk you through the whole thing, and before you know it, it’s over.
